    Lieutenant Colonel Smith was raised in the county of San Diego where his father was a Senior Chief in the U.S. Navy. Lieutenant Colonel Smith graduated from Washington State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1981. After completion of the Basic School at Quantico, VA, and Air Support Control Officer's Course, he reported to Marine Air Support Squadron =i, Cherry Point, NC where he qualified as a Senior Air Director and Senior Strike Controller.

   In 1983, Lt Col Smith was assigned to Marine Air Control Group-28 headquarters as the Adjutant and then as the Assistant Operations Officer, Lt Col Smith completed the navy-A-Defense Training Course and qualified as a weapons controller at Marine Air Control Squadron-6. During July 1985 Lt Col Smith was transferred to Marine Air Control Group -I 8 in Okinawa, Japan where he joined the Tactical Air Command Center as an Air support Coordinator. He extended his tour and was assigned to Marine Air Support Support Squadron-2 as Senior Strike Controller. He then reported back to the Tactical Air Command Center as the Assistant Operations Officer and qualified as an Air Support Coordinator, Air Defense Coordinator, Data link Coordinator, and Senior Air Coordinator.

   In 1987 Lt Col smith transferred to Quantico, VA where he attended the Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School, and in July 1988 reported to the Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity at Camp Pendleton, CA. He was the Assistant Project Officer for the Advanced Tactical Air Command Center and the project Officer for the Improved Direct Air Support Center.

   In 1990 Lt Col Smith transferred to Headquarters Marine Corps Where he was the Readiness Officer in the manpower Division. In 1993, Captain Smith transitioned to the marine Corps Reserve and joined Marine Air Control Squadron-24 at Darn Neck, VA. Upon graduation from Air Defense Control Officers Course, Lt Col Smith augmented the instructor staff at Marine Air Schools. Following assignment to the Department of the Navy Inspector General, Lt Col Smith was assigned to active duty as the Site Commander and later as the Operations Officer for Marine Air Control Squadron-24. He attended the University of Virginia where he received a Masters Degree in Administrative Education leadership. He next transferred to Chicopee, MA and was assigned as the Site Commander for Marine Air Support Squadron-6and Marine Wing Support Squadron-474

   In 2000 Lt Col Smith was assigned as a special staff officer for the Secretary of the Navy. In his last tour he was Western Recruiting region for Prior Service recruiting, Hr retired on 1 September 2004. He is currently serving as the Senior Naval Science Instructor for the Curtis Senior High School NJROTC.

   Lieutenant Colonel Smith's decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one star, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Korean Service Medal, Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation with three stars, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with one star, and the Artic Service Ribbon.

   Lieutenant Colonel Smith is married to Jennifer Louisot, Lieutenant Colonel, USMCR, of Portland, OR

 
 

MSgt Ed Griffin

   Master Sargent Griffin was born in Seattle, Washington on July 4, 1969. Upon graduation from Kentwood high School, he enlisted int he Marine Corps, and attended Boot Camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, February 1988.

  Upon completing Recruit Training, he attended Basic Landing Support Specialist School at Camp lejeune, North Carolina where he earned honor graduate and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lcpl. in 1988 he reported to Alpha Company - LSB, 4th FSSG, Tacoma Washington. In1990, he was promoted to Corporal and activated for Operation Desert Shield/Operation Desert Storm where he deployed to Saudi Arabia and was attached to 6th Motor Transport battalion.

  There he served as Assistant Convoy Commander where he executed over 40 combat support convoy missions throughout Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. In 1993, he was promoted to Sargent and served as Plt. Sgt. to 2nd plt. A Co.  In 1996, he was promoted to Staff Sargent, and transferred to 4th LSB Headquarters where he assumed the duties as Battalion Training Chief at Ft. Lewis, Washington. 

   In 2002, he was activated and deployed to Duwait in support of Operation Enduring/Operation Iraqi freedom, and assigned too Combat Service Support Company 135.  upon Deactivation he returned to 4th LSB headquarters and served as the Battalion Operations Chief. He there was promoted to Gunnery Sargent in 2004 and he has activated once more in support of operation Iraqi Freedom and deployed to Iraq. He was attached to Combat Service Support Battalion I, where he served as the Detachment Commander for Arrival/Departure Airfield Control Group. 

  He successfully took charge of a combined service force to execute the historical polls of the first elections process of Iraq.  Deactivated in August of 2005 he returned to Alpha Company 4th LSB and assumed the duties as Company Gunnery Sargent.  In 2008, he was promoted to Master Sargent and assumed the billet as Company 1st Sgt for Company A, 4 LSB.  Master Sargent Griffin Is Currently serving as the Battalion Operations Chief for 4th LSB in anticipation of his retirement, where he intends on enduring hes career with the NJROTC program as the NSI at Curtis High School.
